Our Expertise

The Cancer Therapy & Research Center is unique in the South Texas region because it is its only academic treatment and research center. That distinction offers our patients a depth and breadth of expertise and knowledge of the latest research that is unequaled in other venues.

Our research partnership with the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio allows both CTRC and the health science center to draw on the other’s resources to advance our quest to conquer cancer. That partnership forms the San Antonio Cancer Institute, which is designated by the National Cancer Institute as a center of excellence. This collaborative structure attracts top doctors and scientists, many of who whom draw global acclaim. Their work can be readily translated into improvements in therapies and patient care. It also puts CTRC on the front lines for new discoveries.

CTRC’s experience with Phase I/II clinical drug studies coordinated by our Institute for Drug Development also benefits our patients because it gives them access to new drugs that are unavailable even in many large cancer centers. The IDD is internationally recognized for conducting the largest oncology Phase I clinical drug studies program in the world. Nineteen of the cancer drugs most recently approved by the Food & Drug Administration underwent development or testing at the IDD.

Our expertise extends to the sophistication of the radiation therapy techniques we use – and sometimes pioneer – to treat our patients and the delivery systems that make it possible. Included in our arsenal of radiation therapy units is one of only three TomoTherapy® Hi Art® treatment systems in Texas and one of just 125 in 16 countries worldwide. This unit integrates optimized planning, image guidance, and continuous 360° delivery for precise radiation therapy from all angles around the patient.

Whether patients come to us for conventional or breakthrough therapies, they can be assured that CTRC stays up-to-the-minute on the latest knowledge and the latest opportunities. That’s how we’re conquering cancer.
