Institute for Drug Development (IDD)
The Institute for Drug Development (IDD) is a key research unit of the Cancer Therapy and Research Center of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, an NCI-designated cancer center that is the focal point for cancer research in South Texas.
The mission of the Institute for Drug Development is to develop new treatments for patients with cancer through integration of translational and clinical sciences. Our clinical trial infrastructure is truly unique, with an outstanding and world renowned Phase I clinical trials program. Most recently-approved oncology drugs underwent early preclinical and clinical development at the institute. The IDD additionally now offers Phase II and III clinical trials for our patients. While the historical strengths of the IDd were in solid tumors it now additionally has expertise in hematological malignancies. The institute’s in vivo and in vitro preclinical models and capabilities in molecular targets and pharmacogenomics.
The IDD teaches oncology drug development in its Advanced Oncology/Hematology Drug Development Fellowship Program, a three-year graduate program for medical oncologists and hematologists approved by the American Board of Internal Medicine as a Non-Standard Program for J-1 trainees. Additionally, the institute puts on an annual course, “Practical Applications of New Agents in Oncology,” at which experts in the field teach medical oncologists how to use new anticancer agents in the clinic. CME credits are provided.
