The Fitness Center is composed of 1,375 square feet that includes a reception area, balance and flexibility training room, strength and cardio training area and an exercise assessment lab. The balance and flexibility room contains equipment such as BOSU® balance trainers, foam rollers, balance discs and stability balls. The strength and cardio area features brand new equipment including a Cybex® Pink treadmill and Arc Trainer and LIVESTRONG® by MATRIX treadmill and recumbent bike. For strength training there is a Cybex® Bravo functional trainer and free weights. The Fitness Center will be open Monday – Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm for all cancer survivors and family members who would like to come for a workout. To learn more about the program or to schedule an appointment, please contact the CTRC Fitness Center at (210) 450-1765.

The Fitness Center was made possible through funding from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) School of Nursing  Science and Technology Acquisition and Retention (STARS) fund and an award from the Cancer Prevention Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) to UTHSCSA entitled “Maximizing Cancer Survivorship: Implementation of an Evidence-Based Exercise Program.” The goal of this program is to deliver an individualized exercise program to cancer survivors in South Texas. Each participant will receive a comprehensive fitness assessment followed by an individualized exercise program that they can perform either at the CTRC Fitness Center or in their own home. The best part of the program is that it is free for participants! The comprehensive fitness assessment includes evaluation of cardiorespiratory, muscular endurance, balance and flexibility functions. Other included measurements are blood pressure, height, weight and waist/hip circumference. Participants will receive a fitness assessment every four months for as long as they continue with the exercise program. After the assessments are complete, the participant will meet with an exercise physiologist who will create an personalized exercise program for them. This exercise program will include both cardio and strength training. The exercise physiologist will instruct the participant on proper exercise form, use of equipment and selecting the proper resistance levels. Participants will receive printed workout cards that they can take with them to follow either at the CTRC Fitness Center or at home. If the participant has questions about their exercise program or needs further instruction, they can schedule an appointment with the exercise physiologist at any time.
