Dr. Karnad received his medical degree from Madras Medical College, University of Madras, India. He has been an active investigator in National Cancer Institute Clinical trials for two decades including trials designed to prevent and treat a range of cancers. He serves as chair of the Protocol Review Committee for the Cancer Center Support Grant for the Health Science Center. He is also institutional principal investigator for the NCI Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) clinical trials at the CTRC. He is co-investigator on a large grant through the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute (CPRIT) to establish a clinical trials network for Texas; a collaborative grant involving all the major cancer and clinical institutions in Texas. His clinical research interests include geriatric oncology and head and neck cancer, and he directs these programs at the Audie Murphy VA Hospital and at the CTRC. He holds the Castella Endowed Chair in Aging. His avowed career goal is to improve the care of cancer patients through accelerating the completion of clinical trials in prevention and treatment in order to develop the prevention and treatment strategies of the future.
