Research Clinic/Infusion Room

Institute for Drug Development

Institute For Drug Development, Phase 1 Lab

The Research Clinic consists of a Triage Area, 10 Exam Rooms, Patient Check-out Area, Doctor's workroom and the Research Infusion suite. The Triage area has 8 blood draw stations and is staffed by Medical Assistants and Primary Nurses. Clinical trial patients are seen by research clinicians, (Principal Investigators & Sub-investigators) in one of the 10 exam rooms. Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and Primary Nurses provide support to our MDs – The Physician's work room is utilized by clinical staff for dictating notes, completing radiology tumor measurements (disease assessment) and to complete various other clinical duties. The Check-out Area is staffed by 3-4 Study Schedulers who are assigned to specific research teams. They are responsible for scheduling all study-required assessments as well as other appointments. Patients enrolled in clinical trials at CTRC will receive treatment in the Research Infusion Room (RIF). The RIF is a large space containing 20 comfortable reclining infusion chairs and 2 procedure rooms. Family / friends are encouraged to sit with their family member / friend.

Nurses in the RIF receive extensive training in research-related topics such as Good Clinical Practices, Best Practices in Nursing and have many years of experimental chemotherapy and research experience. In addition to chemotherapy certification, many of the nurses in the RIF are Oncology Certified Nurses (OCN®) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS®) certified.

In addition to the administration of study drugs, staff in the RIF perform many protocol required clinical tests, such as pharmacokinetic (PK) specimen collections, 12 lead EKGs, Basic Neurological exams, and skin punch biopsies. Our clinic hours are flexible and often tailored to support protocol-specific requirements. Additionally, staffing is staggered as needed to support after hour, weekend, and PK collections.
