Older adults with cancer have different needs than younger adults with the disease. There are many different factors to take into account when dealing with an older adult and cancer treatments.

Some of these factors include:

  • May be less able to tolerate certain cancer treatments.
  • May not respond to certain treatments.
  • May have other medical problems and medications that have to be considered.

As we age, cancer becomes more common. And the body's needs change, especially with things like medication tolerance and side effects. Just as a child with cancer would see a specialist in pediatric cancers, an older adult patient should go to a geriatric oncologist for specialty care.

Our Geriatric Oncology Program physicians are expert in dealing with older patients and their needs.
